Fleet Carnival

This weekend we were at Fleet Carnival, enjoying the sunshine and watching the local children get involved with the parade and activities.

As the sponsors of this year’s ‘Front Cover Idol’ competition, we asked some of the local schoolchildren to design a picture along the lines of the event theme, Prince and Princesses.  The best design received a prize and their drawing was also used for the carnival programme cover.

We got hundreds of entries and I worked with Dan Campling from Brandtastic to work our way through them and decide the winner.  There were some brilliant drawings and I could tell the theme had really captured the imagination of all the kids.

This year’s overall winner was Louisa Friend, who is in Year 5 at Dogmersfield School.  As part of her prize we donated three wall games worth over £500 to her school!  Her drawing was great and we especially loved the Unicorn!

School Playground Equipment – Features That Are a Must

A lot of people have the misconception that teaching and giving education in school is simply about telling the kids about basic subjects. But this is not true. This would just mean that you are giving children only textbook knowledge and developing their brain. For the development of children in schools along with the books one needs to add physical training on regular basis. For this it is must involve school playground equipment. This would not only give the child a chance to develop physically but also give them a little time to refresh their minds. This is important in order to let the child make thier mind active and also in developing concentration power.

Getting school playground equipment and adding sports into the regular curriculum will give the children a chance to make new friends and also understand different natures.

With the use of school playground equipment overall health of the children would improve and they would develop a sense of healthy competition too. All this is must and an essential feature in our design process.

If you want make the next generation healthy from mind as well as physical health wise, take a look at our range of playground equipment and call us today for a free consultation.

Adding Colour to your playground!

We had an enquiry from a local junior school looking to replace 12 old timber benches which had been in their playground for about 10 years.

When we arrived on site we noticed that the old benches where rotting and needed replacing urgently. The school where looking to add colour into the playground as currently the playground looked rather unexciting.

We knew exactly what to offer the school, our Rainbow Backless Benches. Our benches were the perfect match not only do our benches inject instant colour into the playground but the properties of our benches ensure longevity.

Our playground furniture range is made from a material called Greenwood. Greenwood is an Eco Friendly material made from 100% recycled polythene. Greenwood is used as an alternative to traditional materials such as wood, metal and concrete, diverting valuable waste from landfill.

Products that are made from Greenwood are low maintenance, rot proof and resistant to algae, there is little or no requirement for maintenance, painting or preservatives, offering a lifespan of more than four times that of its timber alternatives.

We installed all 12 benches over a period of just 2 days ensuring the minimal disturbance to the school playground, the school where delighted with our playground benches,

"We are so happy with the new benches, they are bright, colourful and really bring the playground to life. We are also pleased they are recycled as it feels like we are doing our bit for the environment"

 Mrs Killick, Oakridge Junior School.

If you have any questions regarding our recycled playground furniture range give us a call on 01252 641740.

Creating an area of Play!

When the Head Teacher of a local infant school, Winklebury in Basingstoke, got in touch with us to transform an underutilised area of her school, we quickly realised how much the school needed to develop this play area.

The school, with assistance from the planning department of Hampshire County Council, were looking to create an area which would provide a safe useable space for the children to interact in.

When we visited the school we took time to observe the children using the area, we noticed that teachers were constantly dealing with children that had fallen on slabs or were playing close to potential hazards like the steps and corners of open windows

Working with Winklebury School we came up with a design that would create an open space where the children would be safe and the teachers could use the playground to develop the children's skills. We incorporated our Playscene Wetpour, Redwood Planters & our Sandpit to create a playground for free flow play. The teachers loved using the play area for various activities so keeping the area simple and open was a key part of the design.

We carried out the installation of the play area over the summer holidays keeping the teachers informed at every stage. When the children returned from the school holidays they were so excited about their new area, it was fantastic to see them running around enjoying the playground.

A “Best in Show” for Playscene at the ECO Schools show.

Playscene had a fantastic time this year at the ECO Schools show and we were delighted to meet so many teachers and children enthusiastic about the ECO Schools campaign.

We made our stand as fun, educational and interactive as possible and many of the ECO School workers voted it best in show.

One of the highlights of the day was when our stand was selected to host Lord Henley from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) so he could meet and greet some lucky school children and discuss their ECO campaign.

Lord Henley said: “I hope young people will be inspired by what they see here today and take what they learn back to their homes, schools and communities to encourage eco-friendly behaviour all over the country.”

During the day we ran a competition to win a school gardening kit which includes our range of apprentice tools, Suttons seeds & a watering can all you need to started in the garden. We had over ninety entries and we'll be announcing the winner shortly.

Playscene proudly sponsers local carnival.

Fleet Carnival is widely regarded as being one of the biggest and best in the south. It brings together members of the community from every age-group, and provides something for everyone in a fun-filled week in July. Gareth Palmer (MD of Playscene)  has very fond memories of the carnival passing past his family home when he was a youngster (long time ago now) so jumped at the chance when he was offered to get involved. Gareth has put forward one of Playscene's Gameboard Activity Tables as a prize for the school who wins the competition to design the artwork for this year's programme. Gareth has quoted "this is the least I can do for the years of enjoyment the carnival has given my family and I over the years".

Ed Balls looking to turn Britains schools green!

Today Ed Balls visited the Pimlico Academy in London to announce plans to help schools join in the fight against climate change, and at the same time to save money on their fuel bills. The Government is investing 12 million pounds in providing schools with free energy display meters showing real-time digital information about their energy use which he hopes all schools take advantage of.

Schools in England contribute around 15 per cent of the countrys public sector carbon emission. Thats roughly the same as all the energy and transport emissions of Birmingham and Manchester combined. So making schools more energy efficient is something that could make a significant difference in our battle against climate change.

Council to impose 'No Fry Zone' around primary schools in drive against obesity.

A council is considering the introduction of a 1,300ft 'No Fry Zone' around all of its 65 primary schools after it was revealed that one in four 10-year-old children are obese.

Lewisham Council is considering adopting the radical proposal after a report found that 25 per cent of year six pupils were seriously overweight.

If agreed by councillors later this month it would mean that no new fast food outlets - such as fried chicken shops and burger bars - will be allowed to open within 400m of a school.

Playscene launch wildlife range

Here at Playscene we have just launched our new product range "Wildife Scene". These products are designed to enable you to create an environment to encourage wildlife into your schools. Using our products provides many opportunities for extending classroom activities. If the pupils are involved in the creation and maintenance of such an area they learn to respect the hard work and skill necessary to produce and maintain an attractive environment. It should also give them a sense of pride and achievement and hopefully will encourage them to develop a life-long respect for the environment in general. Apart from the benefits to the school itself, some satisfaction can be felt that another habitat has been provided for Britains dwindling wildlife!

Playscene encourage schools to grow their own!

As we all know and perhaps remember from our own childhood, memorable learning experiences can stay with us throughout our lives and can really influence the adult that we become.

School gardening projects are a great way to get children exercising out in the fresh air, and the Governments' Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto, launched in 2006 recognised the importance of young people experiencing the world beyond the classroom as part of their learning and development.

So maybe you want to begin with a small vegetable plot, grow a raised bed of wildflowers for bees and butterflies or start a school composting scheme. Here you will find just what is needed to get you started.

Blinkered parents fuel childhood obesity, says report

Seven out of 10 parents think their child takes plenty of exercise, despite only one in 10 doing enough, says British Heart Foundation poll.

Seven out of 10 parents think their child takes plenty of exercise, despite only one in 10 doing enough, a poll found today.

Research for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) found there was a "reality gap" between what parents believe and what actually happens in day-to-day life.

The charity released a report called Couch Kids on how a lack of exercise is fuelling childhood obesity.

No outdoor play "hurts children"

Children's health is suffering because they are losing the chance to play outside, a group of experts has warned. Over-anxious parents, computer games and school tests are to blame, a letter signed by almost 300 academics, authors and charity leaders says.

Are playground games too dangerous?

Pupils at a school in Northumberland have started a petition after being banned from playing tag in the playground because it is considered too rough.

But do you think running around in the playground is dangerous - or an important part of school life?

Have you ever fallen over, scratched yourself or seriously injured yourself while running in the playground?

If so, do you think the ban is a good idea and that running around should be restricted to PE?

Or do you think it's ridiculous as kids have been playing these games for years and should be free to run around during school breaks?
